Fairoak Housing Association is a not-for-profit organisation providing supported accommodation for people with learning disabilities.
Fairoak provides safe, accessible and supportive accommodation that meets the needs of our tenants and our aim is to allow them to lead as independent and fulfilling lives as possible.
In recent times, many of our tenants have had their support packages reduced and this can lead to feelings of loneliness and social isolation. To help combat this, we have launched ‘Friends of Fairoak’.
Our hope is that by recruiting volunteers to befriend our tenants, they will be able to learn new skills and access leisure and social activities that are available in the community.
What can I do to help?
All people with learning disabilities want to do is lead their life in a way that is similar to that of you and I – they would like to:
- live as independently as possible;
- be able to go out for a coffee and socialise;
- go to the cinema, to a concert, go dancing or to the gym;
- be creative and learn new crafts like sewing or knitting;
- take up a new hobby or further their learning;
- go for days out and visit places of interest;
- try new leisure activities like bowling, playing darts or just going for a nice walk.
Sometimes all they need is a little help to give them the confidence to be able to try something new.
Become a Friend of Fairoak and help make this possible!
How much time will it take?
The simple answer is as much or as little as you can offer. The chances are that any activity you currently enjoy, our tenants will also enjoy and they are usually able to join in whenever suits your schedule.
Do I need to travel far?
Our tenants are based in South Lakeland or Furness, with some also located in County Durham and Northumberland. To keep travel time to a minimum, we’d always look to pair you with someone living close to where you live.
Do I need any qualifications?
No, but as you can appreciate, Fairoak tenants are vulnerable people so we must ensure their safety at all times so we will ask you to undertake a DBS check
(something we can arrange for you). If necessary, we are also able to provide access to training courses to help you in your role as a Friend of Fairoak.
