Fairoak Housing Association are delighted to announce the launch of a new enterprise, Friends of Fairoak.
This new initiative has been created with the aim of creating new opportunities for Fairoak’s tenants to become more involved in their local community, encourage involvement and volunteering by the general public, as well as providing a whole host of activities and events that tenants can access.
“Cut-backs in public sector funding has meant that many of our tenants have had their support packages reduced over recent years.” explains Lisa Chant, Fairoak’s Housing Director. “It’s only natural that the reduction in services means less personal contact, something which can lead to feelings of loneliness and social isolation. To help combat this, we have launched Friends of Fairoak.”
“Our hope is that by recruiting volunteers to befriend our tenants, they will be able to learn new skills and access leisure and social activities that are available in the community.”
Friends of Fairoak has already generated initial interest in the South Lakeland area, with the word also spreading further afield.
“Many of our tenants are based in South Lakeland or Furness, with some also located in Carlisle, County Durham and Northumberland. To keep travel time to a minimum, we’d always look to pair volunteers with someone living close by and, likewise, aim to arrange activities within close proximity.”
“An obvious question from volunteers is ‘How much time will it take?’ and the simple answer is as much or as little as you can offer! The chances are that any activity you currently enjoy, our tenants will also enjoy and they are usually able to join in whenever suits your schedule.”
Although some activities are free to organise or attend, others do need funding so Fairoak have been busy raising money in a variety of ways: coffee mornings, a Christmas charity collection with Father Christmas and the Kendal Lions, a sponsored swim in Lake Windermere and a Yorkshire Three Peaks sponsored walk.
